Rey Ramon Gonzalez named Penasco Fireman of the Year

Mayor Alejandro Zepeda Munro, his wife Marcela Albelaiz de Zepeda and Ruben Salido Martinez, Director of Civil Protection led the way in the Fireman Appreciation Day celebration last week, and were on hand to name Rey Ramon Gonzalez Fireman of the Year for 2009 – 2010. Fireman Appreciation Day began at 8:00am with a special thanksgiving mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe catholic church. A parade of Department vehicles followed and then back at the barracks, the new awning was revealed. The Mayor, assembled councilmembers and functionaries then retired to Substation No. 3 for a tour of the installation. The group shared breakfast at the Paraiso del Desierto Hotel, where the Mayor was surprised with an official thank you for all that his administration has done to support the fire department. Firemen, paramedics and their families attended the special ceremony as the Mayor expressed his gratitude to them on behalf of the citizens of Puerto Penasco for their invaluable contribution to the community. “I am proud of our Fire Department. You strive daily to help the rest of us and give a great service to our community”, said Zepeda Munro. Salido Martinez then urged them to keep up the good work and told them their discipline and dedication make them role models to us all. In addition to naming the Fireman of the Year, the Mayor also gave special recognition to those who have crossed the 5, 10 or 15-year mark in service to the Fire Department. Other recognition went to those with the highest scores in the examinations.

 

Local students go back to school, Mayor on hand to greet them

Mayor Alejandro Zepeda Munro and his wife Marcela Albelaiz de Zepeda went to school today to welcome back returning students for the 2010-1011 school year. At Secundaria No. 27, Zepeda Munro said, “Always strive for your dreams, putting hard work and dedication into all that you do so you will grow to do good things in the future”. Council members and other functionaries were there as the flag was raised this morning and the new school year officially began. Zepeda Munro said he wants to motívate the students to approach this school year with gusto and energy so they can Eduardo Nuguid Jimenezget as much satisfaction as possible from their accomplishments. School director Jose Horacio Montaño Ayala welcomed the gathered parents and educators and thanked them in advance for the support that will be required of them in the coming school year. Student Jose Manuel Medrano Ramirez read his winning entry in the Letter to my Parents essay contest. Later, at Primary School Ventura G. Tena and José Acuña Núñez Daycare Centers, the Mayor again exhorted students to make good use of their time and look for ways to be productive in all that they do. He went on to invite all parents to work together with educators to improve conditions for students by giving them an environment most conducive to studying. “The young people here will quite possibly go on to accomplish great things in our community and for our country”, he said. “I pledge my administration will do all that we can to encourage our young people”. The Jose Acuna Day Care students provided a performance for those in attendance.

 

Juarez man killed at RP Marina

Juan Antonio Rodriguez Nogales, 47, was killed in Puerto Penasco on Sunday when he was shot 7 times in the area of the marina where pangas are launched, near the Navy installation. Rodriguez Nogales, was originally from Spain but had been living in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua. He had been in Puerto Penasco for about a week with his family, staying at a local resort. Having just finished trailering his yacht with his Lincoln pickup truck, Rodriguez was washing the boat down when a black Jeep Cherokee pulled up. Witnesses later reported seeing 4 or 5 men armed with AK47s get out of the Cherokee and open fire on the man without any discussion. Investigators later recovered 16 used cartridges at the site. The deceased was said to have been seen daily, putting the boat in the water and trailering it again. Several witnesses say that they had also seen the attackers driving by the parked Lincoln. At the time of his death, Juan Antonio Rodriguez was accompanied by his wife, Juana Silvia de la Cruz, 37, and their 14-year old son.
